How this reading room is organized
This is the working bibliography supplied with the foundation essay, organized by the questions it can help investigate. An entry is a reading direction, not an endorsement of every claim in a work. Publication previews on this site do not constitute completed literature reviews.
Cultural importance does not establish predictive efficacy. Evidence about a particular environmental intervention does not validate every symbolic chart. A correct mathematical construction does not determine a place’s effects on its inhabitants. Institutional designs remain proposals until responsibilities, finances, and local implementation have been examined.
Feng Shui and Chinese cosmology
- Ole Bruun, An Introduction to Feng Shui (2008). An introduction to practices and modern transformations.
- Stephan Feuchtwang, An Anthropological Analysis of Chinese Geomancy (1974). Geomancy as a social and interpretive system.
- Michael John Paton, Five Classics of Fengshui: Chinese Spiritual Geography in Historical and Environmental Perspective (2013).
- Richard J. Smith, Fathoming the Cosmos and Ordering the World: The Yijing (I-Ching, or Classic of Changes) and Its Evolution in China (2008).
- The Zangshu and writings collected under Shen Shi Xuan Kong Xue. Primary traditions to study with attention to editions, attribution, transmission, and lineage.
Practitioner conventions used in the observatory
- Joey Yap, Flying Star Feng Shui ↗: a practitioner account of the period convention, including Period Nine.
- Joey Yap, Real Feng Shui ↗: practitioner descriptions of the nine stars and their elemental associations.
- toea.com, Flying Star Chart ↗: the south-up arrangement and flight path used as a charting reference.
These are foundations for the Feng Shui reading page. Historical persistence and influential practitioners establish cultural significance; they do not alone establish a chart’s predictive validity.
A construction that can be inspected
The Flying Stars observatory uses Moessner’s sieve as a constructive source of integer sequences, then applies explicitly selected cyclic projections. Intermediate rows and parameters make the construction available for inspection.
The new mathematics chapter develops the exact rule through worked examples, an interactive sieve, a proof roadmap, and downloadable technical guides. Its discussion distinguishes the classical power theorem from this project’s nine-palace application.
For a separate account of the mathematical construction, see Cornell’s Nuprl project, Moessner’s theorem ↗. This reference concerns the sieve and its mathematical verification, not Feng Shui.
The generalized modes are proposals developed for this study. They should not be attributed to a historical Feng Shui lineage. Reproducible arithmetic establishes what the program constructs; empirical consequences would require a separate investigation.
Psychology, meaning, and environment
- Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, Beyond Boredom and Anxiety (1975), and Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience (1990).
- C. G. Jung, Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle (1952), and Mysterium Coniunctionis (1955–1956). Philosophical and psychological reference points.
- Stephen Kaplan, The Restorative Benefits of Nature: Toward an Integrative Framework (1995). A framework to examine alongside subsequent empirical research.
- World Health Organization, Environmental Noise Guidelines for the European Region (2018).
The attention page uses this reading path to formulate questions about comfort, sleep, interruption, and voluntary research. A finding about one setting does not automatically establish a whole-city theory of productivity.
AI, work, and collaboration
- Shakked Noy and Whitney Zhang, Experimental Evidence on the Productivity Effects of Generative Artificial Intelligence, Science (2023).
- Erik Brynjolfsson, Danielle Li, and Lindsey R. Raymond, Generative AI at Work, NBER working paper (2023).
- Nicholas Bloom, Ruobing Han, and James Liang, Hybrid Working from Home Improves Retention Without Damaging Performance, Nature (2024).
These works investigate particular tasks and settings. The four futures remain scenarios rather than a single forecast derived from them.
Property, cities, and accountable intelligence
- Karl Marx, Capital, Volume I (1867).
- Henry George, Progress and Poverty (1879).
- F. A. Hayek, The Use of Knowledge in Society (1945).
- Ronald Coase, The Problem of Social Cost (1960).
- Elinor Ostrom, Governing the Commons (1990).
- Jane Jacobs, The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961), and The Economy of Cities (1969).
- NIST, AI Risk Management Framework 1.0 (2023): official framework resources ↗.
These authors do not offer one unified political program. Their disagreements help frame questions of rent, knowledge, externalities, commons, and accountability. A technical risk framework also cannot substitute for the enforceable commitments proposed in the estate charter.
Places and local investigation
- The Constitution of the Kingdom of Bhutan (2008).
- The King of Bhutan’s National Day address concerning the Gelephu initiative, December 2023.
- BIG’s publicly released Gelephu Mindfulness City master-plan materials.
- Lee Kuan Yew, One Man’s View of the World (2013), as a reference for strategic scope rather than a template for the proposed commonwealth.
Announcements and plans describe intentions. A current project assessment would need separate verification of legal authority, financing, implementation, environmental effects, and local participation. The places page therefore presents research questions rather than current investment or safety recommendations.
The next layer is a conversation
The full publications should add interviews and critical responses from tenants, Bhutanese scholars and residents, Feng Shui historians, environmental psychologists, cooperative developers, municipal officials, and property specialists in each proposed jurisdiction.
Expose the framework to the people most likely to bear its costs, as well as those most excited by its promise.
